A function is a rule that connects each input to exactly one output. We use functions constantly to track how one quantity changes against another — a body temperature over time, a weight over weeks. Read the readings as a chart, and the rule becomes something you can see.
Instead of reading each measurement one at a time, plotting them lets you follow the overall pattern — and decide whether the treatment is working.
Every value on the independent axis must correspond to only one value on the dependent axis. At any specific moment, a person can have only one recorded temperature — never two.
The vertical line test makes the rule visible: if every vertical line meets the graph at no more than one point, each input has only one output. Now suppose the same chart claimed the person weighed both 85 and 89 kg on day 5.
