🔍 The Ancient Discovery

Long ago, ancient mathematicians made a remarkable observation: there's a constant ratio between the diameter of any circle and its circumference, regardless of the circle's size. Whether the circle is tiny or enormous, this ratio never changes.

The Universal Pattern

Take any circle around you
Measure its diameter
Wrap the diameter around the circumference
It fits exactly 3 times plus a little bit more
That "little bit more" is approximately 0.14159...

The Fundamental Relationship

$\frac{\text{Circumference}}{\text{Diameter}} = \pi$

$C = \pi d$ or $C = 2\pi r$

This ratio is the same for every circle in the universe!

🎯 What Exactly is π?

Pi (π) is the name we give to this mysterious constant. But here's what makes it so fascinating: it's an irrational number, meaning its decimal representation goes on forever without any repeating pattern.

The Value of π

$\pi = 3.14159265358979323846...$

The digits continue infinitely with no repeating pattern

Why π is Special

🔢 Irrational Number

π cannot be expressed as a simple fraction like 22/7 (though 22/7 ≈ 3.142857... is a good approximation)

🌍 Universal Constant

The same value appears everywhere in mathematics: geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and even probability!

🎯 No Pattern

Unlike 1/3 = 0.333... (repeating 3s), π's digits show no repetitive pattern whatsoever

📚 The Historical Quest

For thousands of years, mathematicians have been obsessed with calculating π to more and more decimal places. This became a challenge of human ingenuity and computational power.

Historical Milestones

🏛️ Ancient Times (~250 BC)

Archimedes: Used polygons to approximate π ≈ 3.1416 (accurate to 3 decimal places)

🏮 Medieval China (~480 AD)

Zu Chongzhi: Calculated π to 7 decimal places: 3.1415926 (incredible for its time!)

⚙️ Industrial Age (1700s-1800s)

Mathematicians: Used infinite series to reach hundreds of decimal places by hand

💻 Computer Age (1900s-Present)

Modern Era: Trillions of decimal places calculated using supercomputers!

🧮 Methods of Calculating π

Over the centuries, mathematicians developed ingenious methods to calculate π with increasing precision.

Classical Methods

📐 Geometric Method (Archimedes)

Draw polygons inside and outside a circle with increasing numbers of sides

                Triangle → Square → Pentagon → Hexagon → ... → 96-sided polygon

∞ Infinite Series

Use mathematical series that converge to π:

                $\pi = 4(1 - \frac{1}{3} + \frac{1}{5} - \frac{1}{7} + \frac{1}{9} - ...)$

💻 Computer Algorithms

Modern algorithms like Chudnovsky's formula can calculate millions of digits per iteration
